SATURDAY AUGUST 21ST

Our plan for the day was to finish up with projects to leave the boat and to head up to Atlantic City and check that out.

First thing to get done? Well remember back at Easter when Ross had to do all sorts of contortions to replace the shower pump? Turns out the new pump he put in was defective. So back in he went. Once again we had to take apart our bedroom, but hopefully this will be the last time!!!

By late morning we took off for Atlantic City. We discovered that the gas stations in New Jersey are all Full Service. No pay at the pump. It’s the law since 1946. Or so we’ve been told. It feels really weird to have some guy come running out to your car and fill up your tank and wash your windows.

In New Jersey, even the dogs are allowed to drive!

Atlantic City isn’t Las Vegas by any means but there are casinos and shows, and the ocean. The Boardwalk runs for over 4 miles along the shoreline.

Immediately we noticed people being pushed around in these carts. They are called Rolling Chairs and have been an attraction here since the 1880’s. My initial reaction when I first saw this was how lazy do you have to be to have someone push you around on vacation? Well after walking for a couple of miles in the heat along the boardwalk I was more than willing to eat my words and have someone (anyone, please!!) wheel me back to where we started.

We didn’t do any gambling but stopped inside of Bally’s Wild Wild West casino for a cold beer. The interior was decorated with a distinct western motif including old mine shafts, saloons, trains, cactus, and western memorabilia. It was fun to wander around and look. New Jersey must have an indoor clean air act because we noticed immediately that the casino didn’t reek like smoke. Almost made me want to sit down at a machine. Almost.

After wandering along the Boardwalk for a while, we left and headed back toward the marina. Wildwood had been suggested as a stop for us too and since it was only a couple of miles from the marina, we stopped. It is also right on the Atlantic and has a boardwalk. It is a complete different feel than Atlantic City. This is very family friendly and is like a huge carnival with amusement parks on the ocean side of the boardwalk and games, t-shirt shops, ice cream and food on the other side.

Many people were the beach too.

We wish we had known about his place when our kids were younger, they would have loved it. And I know we would have been taking our son, John, on this ride. It only looked like there was one man on this ride. But there are a bunch of kids too; you just couldn’t see them because they were too short. You could hear them squealing though and I don’t think they’ll ever forget taking this ride!
