SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 18TH

The fun never stops on a boat. Yesterday just before the arrival of our guest, the forward head (toilet) shall we say acted up. Good news, we had the replacement part. Bad news, it’s a stinky job! Roscoe and LaFoote got it fixed though. I made myself scarce so no photos!

Since we had LaFoote’s car we took advantage of it to go to the grocery store to reprovision. Once that was out of the way we drove to the Lyndhurst Castle for a tour. It was pretty interesting. A mayor of New York City built it back in 1820. Jay Gould who considered himself to be the most hated man in the late 1800’s later purchased it. He was born in poverty but rose to be one of the wealthiest men in America. He was known to be a railroad baron and a master of bribery and insider stock trader. Doesn’t sound like a very nice neighbor. Anyway, he loved this place and built a huge green house where he used to love to spend time. He had 5 kids. The 3 boys went off to pretty much become bums and waste their inheritance. One daughter went to France and married the first count she could find. The oldest daughter married and stayed at Lyndhurst raising a family and giving respite to any nieces and nephews.

The skeletal remains of the greenhouse. It was huge. They raised everything from orchids, to grapes, to experimental plants. The shell being made of steel was revolutionary and the modern day greenhouse is model after this design.

When the older sister died, the younger sister (then about 70) came back from France and took over the place. She eventually donated it to the State. So everything inside of it is original.

A short walk from the marina is a small restaurant called Mavis Mae’s BBQ. We had to wait a bit for our table but it was well worth it.

Great chow and plenty of it.

Walking back we crossed paths with a skunk! He was running, and thank God, had his tail down!!! I was relieved when he ran through a space in a fence and disappeared.
