WEDNESDAY JULY 13TH 2011

Once again it is breezy but we are only a traveling a short 18 miles. We bucked a headwind for the last part of it to reach our anchorage in the Shawanaga old picnic area. Or as Ron from RUNNING ERINS calls it, chimichanga.

Ross listens on the marine radio for the weather forecast. He frantically scribbles down numbers being said as he listens. Its sounds to me like a secret code. And it is, sort of. You need a chart to decipher the numbers. It is a series of 5 numbers and each number corresponds to something on the chart. Today’s forecast was given as “1, Georgian Bay, 5, 8, 1, 0".  Deciphered it tells us that it is the forecast for the
(1)Great Lakes, Georgian Bay area, (5)forecast for the next 18 hours, (8)wind is from the North, (1)at 11-16 knots, (0)weather condition is fine, mostly clear.

The bottom in Shawanaga is sand and we hooked the anchor on the first try, unlike yesterday. But we won’t talk about that.

It is a quiet little spot to anchor, but I think we are all ready to move on in the morning to someplace else a little farther up the pike. We took the dinghies to shore. It’s a nice sandy beach and Ron went swimming.

Lots of interesting colored rocks. I found one that looked like it had a face on it. I thought maybe we could claim it had the face of the Virgin Mary on it and sell it for a bundle on Ebay. But when Ross commented it looked like the face of Charlie Brown I figured my plan probably wouldn’t fly.

We have seen formations of rocks piled on many islands along the way. Do they mean anything significant? Were they a warning? Were they put there by the ancient elders? All I know is they sell replicas in the stores in the shape of earrings, refrigerator magnets, candle holders, you name it. I captured this rare photo of an island elder using rocks to form the symbol for “Beware, this  island has stinking, biting black flies.” No wait. I guess that’s just Bill from GULLWING.
